Museo Reina Sofia Madrid shows Guernica of Pablo Picasso in retrospective exhibition
25 years ago, Pablo Picasso's painting Guernica was permanently moved to the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid. The monumental painting will now be on display along with 150 other works by the artist on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the pacifist masterpiece.
Picasso painted the canvas in 1937, commissioned by the Spanish government for the Spanish pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris. When the Basque town of Guernica was bombed, the artist became inspired by it and he made a pacifist work. Meanwhile, the masterpiece is one of the most famous paintings in the world. After World War II the painting traveled around the world. It was shown in 1956 at the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels.
The exhibition "The way to Guernica" runs from April 4 to September 4, 2017. More than 150 works by Pablo Picasso from more than thirty collections from around the world will be brought together in the exhibition.
