Panamarenko is 70 years old

 Henri van Herwegen, better known as Panamarenko (Antwerp, 5 februari 1940) just became 70 years old. Panamarenko is a pseudonym for a contraction of "Pan American Airlines and Company", it was also the name of a Russian general during the Cold War. The choice for this artist name is typical for this artist: it is exentrique, stubborn and... it has something to do with flying. Panamarenko is in art from the middle of the fifties. Before 1968 his work was inspired by the pop-art wave. Pretty soon after that he was in the spell of the airplaine and flying by own force. Since 1970 Panamarenko worked on his very famous scalemodels of his imaginary vehicles, plains, balloons and helicopters. Panamarenko is seen as one of the most distinguished representative of the Beligan sculpturors of the 20th century. |
On september 29th 2005, Panamarenko announced his retirement. He found that it was time to do something else. Anyhow, the work of Panamarenko, as wel as the artist himself are still getting the public attention they deserve. |
