Nam June Paik was an American artist born in South Korea. He was a famous Fluxus-artist who is concidered the creator of video art.
Paik escaped from Korea with his family in 1949 and went to Japan. In Tokyo, he studied philosophy and esthetics. Later in the former West-Germany he studied music history and composition. In 1957 he meets the avant-garde componist Karlheinz Stockhausen and one year later John Cage. Paik also had contact with the creator of the Fluxus movement, George Maciunas.
In the Fluxus-tradition, he held many performances in which electronics took an inmportant part. In a great part of his performances, the American chellist Charlotte Moorman played an important role. Later, Paik was more active in sculpturing. He made lots of installations with monitors, TV-srcreens, videos. He is also the inventor of the videosynthesizer.
