In 1969, looking back on the early years of his artistic career, Dutch artist Jan Henderikse (b. 1937, Delft) observed, “You’re not making art for your friends, but to be able to make art you do need them.” Jan Henderikse: In Transit examines the cornerstones of Henderikse’s program, as a prominent member of the Dutch Nul group, his affiliation with the international ZERO movement, his life as a “New Realist” and beyond: from Informal painting to assemblage and readymade, from conceptual photography and film to installation art.

Jan Henderikse is an artist “in transit.” Delft, the “ZERO years” in Düsseldorf, Curaçao, New York, the divided Berlin of the 1980s and Antwerp: this monograph is a missing link in the historiography of the Dutch Nul group, and a tour along the avenues and side streets of Jan Henderikse’s life in art.
